The Spiritual Combat: Classic Edition

Lorenzo Scupoli

List Price:   Paperback $5.89
eBook Formats $1.99

PREVIEW

The Spiritual Combat is a practical "guide" to the spiritual life, with a message centered on humility, and a goal to defeat individual passions. The author begins the process with self-evaluation and identifying our internal weaknesses. He then provides us with the methods to battle these shortcomings and guard against our own evil inclinations.

Lorenzo Scupoli (c.1530-1610), was born in Otranto, Italy. He was admitted to the religious order of the Theatine Regular Clerks of St. Cajetan, in 1571, and by his desire, was called Lorenzo of Otranto. He later went to Milan, under the provost St. Andrew Avellino. After many years of active duties, he retired into strict seclusion and wrote The Spiritual Combat.

In 1589, the first edition of Il combattimento spirituale (The Spiritual Combat) appeared and contained thirty-three chapters. But Scupoli continued to add to the text, and it gradually grew into the current version containing sixty-six chapters. Since its introduction, four centuries ago, approximately six hundred editions have been published globally.

The Classic Edition contains the complete original text of The Spiritual Combat, including all sixty-six chapters, but does not include any supplementary material.

Scriptoria Books has transcribed this edition word for word from the original text. It was then edited, formatted, typeset, and proofread through each revision. Our procedures are not automated. Our editions are not facsimiles and do not contain OCR interpreted text. Our books are carefully created new editions of classic works.

 Life in Hawaii
 An Autobiographic Sketch
of Mission Life and Labors
(1835-1881)

 - Revised 2nd Edition -
 Titus Coan

List Price:   Paperback $12.88
eBook Formats $5.99

PREVIEW

Life in Hawaii is a brief overview of the life and times of Titus Coan (1801-1882), an extraordinary man who lived during the early days of the colonization of Hawaii. He was born and raised in rural Connecticut, graduated from Auburn Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1833. In 1834 he sailed with his new wife, Fidelia Church, to Hilo, where he was to remain and make his life’s work for the next 48 years.

After learning and mastering the Hawaiian language, he won the confidence of the Hawaiians and converted thousands to Christianity. He set up schools, as did his wife, and provided medical assistance and comfort to a rapidly changing culture. He later established churches and trained native converts to act as missionaries among their own people.

He traveled extensively, and at times with great peril, throughout his island home and later to the Marquesas Islands. His adventures and descriptions of first-time encounters with both the environment and the people are quite remarkable. This was a time of great excitement and great despair. Foreign interests in Hawaii, military engagements, visitors of renown, and Hawaiian Kings all provide a rather colorful backdrop against which his story is told.

In addition to his missionary labors, Titus Coan added a great deal to our knowledge of volcanic eruptions. He corresponded and worked with geologist James Dwight Dana, performed many observations, and published with the American Journal of Science. For decades he explored and recorded the volcanic activity on the island of Hawaii.

Titus Coan is perhaps best known for his books Adventures in Patagonia (1880) and Life in Hawaii (1882).

The Way to Converse with God
A Short Treatise on Prayer

List Price:   Paperback $8.80

Talking with God contains four of St. Alphonsus Liguori’s works detailing the mysteries of the interior life: “The Way to Converse with God,” “A Short Treatise on Prayer,” “Mental Prayer,” and “The Presence of God.”

Within these works, St. Alphonsus stresses the importance of the inner life; the ease with which we can converse with God; on how the eternal truths are revealed to us; the absolute necessity of prayer, and how all is eventually lost without prayer. He directs us as to how to talk with God; explains how God answers us; how God listens to the prayers of everyone, and shows us how to continually have God’s Presence with us throughout our day.

St. Alphonsus authored more than one hundred books on spirituality and theology over his lifetime. Many were written during the half-hours he snatched between his labors as missionary, religious superior, and Bishop. St. Alphonsus was canonized in 1839, and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871.

Digital File Formats

by admin on Sep.17, 2010, under scriptoria

Digital File Formats

Digital file formats for eBooks can often be separated into two general categories: fixed layout formats, and reflowable formats.

Fixed layout formats are typically designed for printing. The contents of fixed layout files are displayed on the screen in the same way that they will appear once printed. Images, words, paragraphs, and columns are positioned at fixed coordinates within a page. The layout of the page is determined by the publisher. We use the Adobe PDF format for our fixed layout publications. PDF files are generally best viewed on a computer, as smaller devices are sometimes unable to display the content accurately.

Reflowable formats are typically designed to be displayed on devices where the screen size is not known. The content of the publication is reflowed, and the text is automatically wrapped to fit and adapt to the screen size of the user’s device. The user (rather than the publisher) chooses the font family, font size, margin size, etc., and adjusts these features as desired. Our reflowable format publications use either the AZW, EPUB, MOBI, or PRC file formats. The EPUB format is fast becoming an industry standard, and EPUB files can be read by most modern eBook reader devices. MOBI and PRC formats are typically associated with small screen devices such as Palm and Blackberry. The AZW file format is used by Amazon’s Kindle.

Alice’s Adventures Under Ground
The Original Story

Lewis Carroll

List Price:   Paperback $9.77

Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures Under Ground is the original version of the story that became Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Written in 1864, the tale recounts a story that Charles Dodgson (pen-name Lewis Carroll) told to entertain some children, during an outing, in the summer of 1862. In this story, we are introduced to Alice, along with many of her acquaintances already familiar to us (such as the White Rabbit, the Caterpillar, and the Queen of Hearts), as she journeys into that magical world she discovered through a rabbit-hole. Dodgson later enlarged this story, as it became the foundational work for his well-known stories about Wonderland.

Alice’s Adventures Under Ground and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland are different in a number of respects, most notably in the length of the stories. Alice’s Adventures Under Ground contains approximately 12,715 words, where the expanded version, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, consists of over 26,000 words. Also of note, are the differences between the artwork included with the two stories. The original manuscript, Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, was completely illustrated by Carroll, whereas the artwork for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, was provided by Sir John Tenniel.

This edition, sets in type, the original 1864 handwritten manuscript, Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, by Lewis Carroll, and includes 37 illustrations by the author. The text was transcribed from the 1886 Macmillan & Co. facsimile, and proofed from images of the original Lewis Carroll manuscript at the British Library, Add. MS 46700.

Theologia Germanica

Theologia Germanica
Modern English Edition

Susanna Winkworth

List Price:   Paperback $8.80
eBook Formats $5.99

PREVIEW

The Theologia Germanica is believed to have been written around 1350, by a priest in the house of the Teutonic order in Frankfort, Germany. The author may have been associated with the “Friends of God,” led by Dominicans, John Tauler and Blessed Henry Suso. This book came to the attention of Martin Luther, and he is credited with giving the treatise its modern name. Written over a century before Luther’s time, its theology draws upon the Latin Christianity of the Rhineland. The Theologia Germanica has appeared in many editions and languages over its 600-year history, and has taken its place beside the Imitation of Christ, in literature of devotion.

Susanna Winkworth (1820-1884), translated the most complete version of the Theologia Germanica known, based on the Wurtzburg Manuscript, discovered in the 19th century. Her translation, first published in 1854, includes additional passages not found in the editions made popular by Martin Luther.

In this Modern English Edition of the Theologia Germanica from Scriptoria Books, only obsolete, archaic, and poetic words have been edited. The grammar and syntax of Susanna Winkworth’s original translation from the German manuscript, have been preserved. This creates an edition that is true to the composition of the original translation, while providing a more-modern easier-reading text for the reader.

Leo Tolstoy

Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoi (Leo Tolstoy) (1828-1910), was a Russian author and moral philosopher. Tolstoy is regarded as one of the world’s greatest writers and is perhaps best known for his novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina.

Later in life, Tolstoy formulated a unique Christian philosophy based upon the teachings of Jesus, and rejected the institutional doctrine of the Church. These convictions made a profound impact on his life and are reflected in his writings after the year c.1880.

My Religion is a comprehensive exposition of this newfound faith, where Tolstoy lays out in detail every important aspect of his belief, and strives to explain the true meaning of Christ’s message, and where the Church has strayed from the Word of God.

This edition of My Religion, from Scriptoria Books, is an authentic reproduction of the Huntington Smith translation. It has been transcribed word for word and formatted for print and digital media.
